We have listened to your feedback on our desktop application, and are truly thrilled to announce Yammer Desktop 2.0. We have built this app from the ground up, to deliver notifications, threaded conversations, and direct messages — in real time — directly to the desktop. We will be rolling this out to existing users of the Yammer desktop application over the course of several weeks. You can also download it directly from the website.
The new desktop application leverages features built for the Yammer web application. As you can see from “My feed” below, the new desktop user experience is comparable to the web experience:
New features include:
- Threaded Conversations – Easily follow conversations with replies displayed underneath the original message.
- Notifications – Keep track of new messages, @mentions, replies and more with notifications. View all notifications on a separate tab to ensure important messages are never missed:
- Direct Messages - Communicate privately with one or more colleagues and add additional participants to the conversation at any point.
- Topics - Create, edit, and use topics to tag content, enabling better curation and discovery of conversations.
- Document Viewer – Instantly access, edit and comment on documents appearing within the feed via a browser-based viewer.
Enjoy, and let us know your thoughts!
- Maria

How do I add a second network with the new app?… It doesn’t appear to have the same settings it used to?…
Hi Kristen! The current version doesn’t support multiple accounts. In future releases, we plan on adding that capability. It doesn’t have the same settings because it’s a completely new desktop app, and not an enhancement to the previous app.

Whoa, the app’s window is too wide now, I’m on a 15″ MacBook Pro and the app window takes-up almost half the width of the screen. Please allow us to resize it back down like it was before. Reminds me of how Skype turned into a fat, clunky window that blocks much of the screen.
Maybe have the tab for Direct Messages truncate down to DM automatically, the Search tab can obviously shrink down to just he magnifying glass. In fact have it so all tabs can just shrink down to icons with mouseover hints.
Not impressed at all!
The window is so wide that I might as well just have a browser window open with the online version.
The fact that you have to uninstall the old to install the new shows me that your programmers are not professional and show a lack of follow-through in their work. (Plus, your upgrade help instructions on how to uninstall the old were not accurate either.)
One final beef is that it is much harder now to find posts by specific individuals. When I pull down My Feed and select a specific individual who I follow, I get the entire thread if they have commented, liked, or were mentioned at all and very often you cannot even see where they were involved because the threads are trunkated down to the most recent instead of to the individual. If I toggle the view to eliminate threads then I still don’t get posts and comments from just that individual. I get posts and comments from a lot of others randomly with no reasoning as to why they show up under that individual.
Overall rating of this new version….
FAIL!!!!!
Very well put Baron. I hope they listen to your suggestions and make it happen very soon.
fail – cant switch between networks anymore!! urgently need this feature back.
Thank you for sharing your feedback about the app. We purposely designed this app to closer approximate the web app experience. We also included threading. This makes it necessary for the app to be wider than it was. You make a good point about shrinking some things down; I’ll share this with our product team.
Thank you for your suggestions!

Ed, thank you for sharing your thoughts. Please see my comment above re: app width. I understand your frustrations on the install process and apologize for the experience. This was partially caused by the fact that this application was built completely from the ground up vs. being an upgrade. I’m going to share this with the engineering team; perhaps we can troubleshoot with you. Can you please email me at maria (at) yammer-inc.com?
Regarding ability to find posts — can you clarify? If you want to see posts by a particular individual, just click that person’s name, and you will get a timeline of the posts they’ve created, liked, commented on, etc. If you are referring to seeing the non-threaded view in your feed, you can toggle between threaded and non-threaded in the lower left-hand corner.
Thanks!

George, I understand your frustration. Because the app was rebuilt from the ground up, this feature hasn’t been built yet, but will be in future releases.
Thanks!

This is really disappointing. We use multiple networks and the lack of support for that in V2 is a dealbreaker.
If this is not an “enhancement” to the previous desktop app, why does it offer to auto-update? If a new release loses a major feature, it should be made clear to users so that we don’t assume it’s an update, but rather a different product with a different spec.
Everyone in my organization is now moving back to the old AIR app. It’s a shame, because the new app does seem great in other ways.
the windows version is unreliable – constantly locking up and has to be restarted. the notifications to window seem random – when they do occur they are late (most important complaint to me). i likewise agree that the window is much too large – as a dev, i’m completely unimpressed – the lack of ability to resize the window when that is such a simple thing to implement smells of a lack of forethought overall in this version. you should have left this as a beta.
i’m replying to my previous comment as i just noticed for the very first time that this IS a beta (click the bug icon in the lower left corner – popup window declares this is a beta)! only you didn’t advertise it as such, nor did you allow us to opt in – and we should have had the option to participate or not w/full disclosure as to what was there and what was not.
so … you need to put the last released version back up for those that need to return to it. AND … you need to iterate faster on this beta. been 11 days.
A big +1 on the adjustable width. It’s driving us all bonkers!
I’m not sure I understand why the threading implies we can’t adjust the width any more. Love to have that back. Thank you for listening!
Is there anywhere I can get the old Yammer App? I need to switch several accounts. Thanks!
Hi David,
This is not a beta. We accidentally left the beta language in the report bug dialogue. We are working on a number of stability improvements which we will have out to you in the next few weeks.
I apologize for the problems you are having with the application.

Hi George,
You should still be able to switch between networks with the network drop-down menu in the upper-right-hand-corner of the app. If you are referring to multiple account support, we are working on it and will address it in a new build next month.

Hi Raymond,
The main driver of the new width of the app is to support the various message types now available on Yammer (polls, link previews, events, etc.). The new desktop app ensures that the feed is wide enough to accomodate these message types. I understand that users are not happy with the new width so we are working on making changes so that the app can be resized.
Thanks,

Hi…Our company has been using Yammer since the early days for instant communication between our dispatcher and roving technicians. We feel that the update you have made to the desktop has destroyed the usefullness of your program. The desktop no longer updates the message feed automatically. You either have to refresh the feed or click to see new messages (why?). I can not believe that other users are happy with this functionality. Would you consider making this a user setting in the desktop app? I would hate to have to go find another application and stop using your program.
The newer version sure seems more robust, but I have to agree it is missing the ability to have multiple Yammer accounts logged in at the same time. Please add this feature!
Thanks for your comment, Lex! We rebuilt the app as a brand new app, and although multiple accounts weren’t part of the 1st iteration, this functionality is definitely coming in the future. Thanks for your patience!
Let me echo the need for multiple accounts in the desktop client ASAP — thank you Yammer!
We’re working on it!

Also looking forward to multiple account support.
Do you when this feature will be available?
